In mathematics, we solve for X. The conditions are known. The answer is objective. Businesses do the same thing every day: solve for sales, volumes, profit, cashflow, headcount, shareholder returns. These are obviously good problems to solve.
But in the relentless pursuit of X, it's easy to forget the Why's — the not-so-straightforward, often counter-intuitive solutions to some of the world's most pressing problems. Climate change and environmental degradation. Forgotten communities left behind by globalisation. Corruption by middlemen who extract value without creating it. Exploitation of the vulnerable. Dysfunctional families. Unproductive youth. Fast-paced, unhealthy lifestyles.
